Picture this: listening to bugs humming and elephants rolling around in the dirt as the sun is setting.
Sounds wonderfully peaceful, right?
Loop Abroad is arranging a 2-week trip over the summer to Thailand exclusively for UC Davis students. This experience will allow undergraduates to dip their feet into the world of veterinary medicine. Approximately 8 to 12 people will be accommodated each trip. With such intimate groups, undergraduates will be able to learn and hone their clinical and technical skills – more so than they would learn in the United States. It sounds like it will be a better idea than binge-watching all 13 seasons of Grey’s Anatomy on Netflix.
Each day, students will attend classes that consist of step by step procedures of spaying and neutering dogs and cats, blood borne diseases, canine anatomy and examinations, skin diseases, how to physically restrain animals and drawing blood from a PVC pipe apparatus. Students can also receive 72 veterinary and 8 research hours for vet school applications.
“I got to do a lot of things that I haven’t done so far in vet school,” UC Davis School of Veterinary medicine student Elisa McAfee said. “You learn so much from [the trip]. It’s a unique experience that makes you stand out [during the veterinary school application process].”
“[This trip allows] you to work with water buffalo, elephants, horses, dogs, cats and goats,” UC Davis School of Veterinary medicine student Theresa Aller said. “It’s a very [diverse] range of animals you can work with. You also get to spend a lot of time one on one with a veterinarian.”
Currently, McAfee and Aller are currently polling those who are interested to set an official date. They estimate the total cost of the trip will be around $3,275 plus airfare. A $1000 deposit is due by January 30, 2017, but it can be split into two $500 deposits instead. Payment plans are also available for the rest of the trip’s expenses. Selling Thai pants from Animal Kind Clothing or applying for school grants and scholarships are among the few fundraising options.
