What is the Masters of Professional Studies in Dairy Technology program?
Instead of 2 years for a Masters degree plus a thesis, MPS only lasts one year without writing a thesis. It is on the quarter system so this means the program spans three quarters (~45 units). You will also have a three-month paid internship working with companies like Starbucks, Safeway and Tilamook.
Did you say paid internship?
Yes! You can make anywhere between $20 - $30 an hour at a company. The internship requirement is about 400 to 500 hours. That means you can make $8000 to $15000 dollars within the three month period. Depending upon when you applied and are accepted into the program, you can apply for a summer internship (the summer before the program begins) to make additional money. Keep reading this post for additional information.
Is housing taken care of for my internships?
Yes, it is! If you are sent to Wisconsin, you will have your flights and housing completely paid for by the company that hires you.
Would I be in debt?
The program itself costs around $20,000. If you do both internships (summer before and the one required for the program) you might be able to walk away debt free. Double check the website for more information.
What are some examples of courses I might have to take?
The program starts at an elementary level then progresses to Masters level. You will have to take chemistry (biochem, analytical and general chemistry), microbiology, and other food science courses. Tom Johnson stressed you do not have to have a food science background. As an undergraduate all you need to take are general science courses. The courses reflect their belief to teach science and apply it to every day life.
Are there any field trips?
The first quarter of the program is filled with field trips! You will go every Friday to a facility to talk to managers about their operations. It is a great networking experience.
How many students would be in my classes?
About 15 to 20 students (or however many they believe qualify for the program). You will be such a tight knit group.
What skills do they look for in applicants?
They want students who are not only have good technical skills, but also are great leaders. This includes having great communication skills as you are going to be trained for managing/leadership positions within big companies.
What is the starting salary out of the program?
Tom gave us a range from $70,000 to $75,000 (2015).
I’m convinced… What do I need to apply?
It is an online application. You will need your academic transcripts, 2-3 letters of recommendation, resume, and GRE scores. If you’re an international student (and graduate of Davis) you do not need to submit TOEFL scores.
When is the application period?
It is a rolling application that opens up on October 1 and closes April 1. They also don’t require a deposit in the case you were admitted to hold your spot. The earlier you apply, the earlier you can apply for a summer internship (and make more money!).
If you have any questions regarding the program please contact Tom Johnson either by email or cell phone (970) - 215 - 3459. If you want a brochure that was passed out during PSSD's January 19 meeting, please email PSSD publicity coordinator Katie DeVore.
