Some of the main advice and tips Joanne shared with us were:
- Know who you are: Most admissions committees are looking for the three main characteristics of resilience, intelligence, and leadership from their students. That doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to be in a thousand clubs and hold board positions in all of them, instead you can distinguish yourself by talking about your experiences as a leader for something as simple as a group project, internship, etc.
- Grades Grades Grades: The one thing that many students cringe at the idea of. Let’s be honest, school is hard and we are all trying to juggle a thousand things, but essentially grades are important! Focus on your GPA, but don’t fear if it isn’t looking too hot. Consider taking another year, retaking classes at a community college, or even grad school could be an option. Remember that no one path is for everyone!
- Start your application early: It is never too early to start on your application because the day will come that you need all of your documents ready to go. Make sure to record everything, such as your clinical hours or even non-vet related volunteer experiences! Let’s be honest do you even remember what you ate last weekend? I definitely don’t even know what I ate for dinner last night. Also, it is never too early to start making connections with your professors to get that letter of recommendation.
- Choose you: Most importantly, choose yourself throughout the entire process! Look into schools that will interest YOU, not where people are telling you to go. You’re the one that will have to eat, sleep, and breathe wherever you choose to pursue your degree, not them! Keep in mind the climate, the surrounding area of the school and what will make you happy at the end of the day.
